Language is central to children’s learning and development. In the new Primary Curriculum Framework, Language is guided by the Primary Language Curriculum (PLC).
The Language area includes three subjects:
Gaeilge: developing children’s ability to communicate confidently in our national language and nurturing pride in Ireland’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
English: building children’s skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking so they can express themselves clearly and effectively.
Modern Foreign Languages: is a new subject area and is to be introduced from 3rd Class upwards, giving children the opportunity to experience and enjoy learning an additional language.
While Gaeilge, English, and Modern Foreign Languages are taught as distinct subjects, language learning is woven through every part of the curriculum. Children use talk, reading, writing, and communication to explore ideas, share their thinking, and engage with all other subjects. Gaeilge neamhfhoirmiúil is also an important part of daily school life.
