At Scoil Mhuire Brierhill, kindness is at the heart of our school community. Our Bí Cineálta Policy to Prevent and Address Bullying Behaviour sets out how we promote inclusion, prevent bullying, and respond effectively if it occurs. The policy fully complies with the Department of Education’s national Bí Cineálta procedures (2024).

Definition of Bullying
  • Bullying is targeted behaviour, online or offline, that causes harm. The harm caused can be physical, social and/or emotional in nature. Bullying behaviour is repeated over time and involves an imbalance of power in relationships between two people or groups of people in society.
  • Prevention is our priority. We promote kindness and respect through:
Building a positive, inclusive school culture where children feel a strong sense of belonging.
  • Using Restorative Practice to repair relationships and encourage empathy.
  • Teaching the Stay Safe and RSE programmes as part of SPHE.
  • Delivering the FUSE Anti-Bullying Programme from 4th Class upwards.
  • Encouraging peer support initiatives such as Yard Buddies.

When concerns arise, all pupils are listened to and parents are informed. The focus is on supporting the child affected, addressing the behaviour, and restoring relationships where possible. All incidents are recorded, monitored, and followed up to ensure the behaviour has stopped.

The Board of Management oversees the policy, receives regular updates, and ensures it is reviewed annually.
